We live in a world where we are continuously exposed to toxins. Many of these toxins come from our diet, our lifestyle and environmental exposure. Almost everyone needs to detox or cleanse.
The Canadian Medical Association recently released a study that reported that approximately 21,000 Canadians (mostly seniors) will die in 2008 from short-and long-term exposure to air pollution. By 2031, the report predicts this number will reach an astounding 39,000 deaths a year due to heart and lung conditions caused by breathing polluted air.
When we eat non-organic foods, we ingest pesticides, bleaching agents, preservatives and artificial colouring. Hormones and antibiotics can be found in our conventional meat. Many consumer products – including nail polish, scented lotion, tin food cans, non-stick cookware, paints and household cleaners – contain synthetic substances.
Personal lifestyle habits, such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and taking drugs (pharmaceutical and recreational), create toxic substances and overwhelm our natural detoxification mechanisms. Negative thoughts and stress lead to biochemical toxicity.
Environmental Defence, a non-profit based in Toronto, has conducted several studies, testing the toxicity of Canadians across the country. In one study, it was discovered that children had an average of 23 toxins in their system, while adults had an average of 32. These toxins included carcinogens, hormone disruptors, respiratory toxins, neurotoxins and reproductive/developmental toxins. (Read More)
Internally, fats (especially oxidized fats and cholesterol) and free radicals also act as toxins. Intestinal bacteria, yeasts and parasites create metabolic waste.
Dr. Elson M. Haas – a specialist in cleansing and nutrition – writes: "Much disease, especially degenerative disease, comes from congestion and stagnation in the body (in the organs, tissues, circulation, lymph and cells), and this congestion/stagnation state can be cleared from the body through cleansing and detoxification."
Our bodies are equipped with excellent detoxification mechanisms. However, we can't realistically expect our bodies to keep us healthy if they are faced with excess toxins and/or poor elimination, weak digestion and reduced liver function.
Why do people cleanse or detox?
We detoxify and cleanse to rejuvenate ourselves, to improve our health, to clear symptoms and to inhibit future health issues. Detoxification is excellent for weight loss and fat reduction. Obesity is often connected with toxicity. We store many poisons in our fatty tissues. As a result, when we cleanse our bodies of impurities, we also reduce our fat.
If you love to eat, a cleansing program is a great way to achieve balance. A cleanse is an excellent tool to help us make positive changes and clear unhealthy habits, such as addictions to (and excessive use of) sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and drugs.
Why wait another day? Empower yourself and take control of your health.
